Workplace accidents are an unfortunate possibility in any line of work, but for the men and women who work in roadway construction crews, the possibilities are very present each and every day. Recently, a motorcycle crash on Route 56 incited community frustrations about the conditions of a passage that is under construction, making safe driving more difficult and ultimately endangering lives.
The accident occurred on Saturday, Sept. 3, when a motorcyclist lost control on 56 and ran into a car. The motorcyclist was transported to a nearby hospital, and fortunately no construction workers were injured. However, it is easy to see how the injuries could have been much more severe.
Following the incident, members of the community complained that the safety precautions along this passage of the roadway were more confusing than helpful, likely increasing danger rather than decreasing it. A particular area involving very narrow lanes delineated with bright traffic cones was described as being very confusing, and possibly contributing to the accident.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has responded to the incident and the ensuing outcry from the community by agreeing to install a median barrier along the passage, something that local authorities claim they have been requesting for years. The stretch of road has already been the site of several fatal crashes, and if only a few of the factors in this case were different, roadside construction workers could easily have been injured or lost their lives. It is easy to imagine a scenario where the motorcycle may have swerved to miss the car and instead plowed into those working on the site. While it is good to see that the PDT is finally addressing this problem area, one can only hope that the site is made safe enough before more unnecessary injuries or fatalities occur.
Workplace accidents are often the result of poor oversight on the part of those in charge of keeping a worksite safe. If you have been involved in a workplace accident, or believe that your workplace is not being made adequately safe, especially in high-danger fields such as roadway construction, you may find that the guidance of an experienced workplace accident lawyer may help you protect your rights as you explore your options for recovery.
