What is the purpose of Supplemental Security Income?

For some Pennsylvania residents, it might be difficult to meet his or her financial needs due to a disability or injury. When such a situation occurs, federal benefit programs could be utilized to help the individual achieve a financial level that would allow them to meet the basic cost of living. In most cases, this means applying for Supplemental Security Income or SSI.

What is the purpose of Supplemental Security Income? The SSI program was designed to help those that are aged, blind and disabled that have very little or no income. The program provides a means for applicants to meet basic needs for items such as food, clothing and shelter.

In order to qualify for the SSI federal program, and individual must be 65 years of age or older, completely or partially blind or suffering a medical condition that prevents them from working and is expected to last at least one year or cause the person's death.

Once it is determined that an applicant is eligible to apply for SSI benefits, he or she can initiate the application process. This will likely require the applicant to provide detailed information and documentation that will help prove he or she qualifies for this benefit. If an individual is approved, their monthly payments will be based on factors such as the state he or she lives in, income and possessions, such as a home.

Those applying for SSI disability benefits should understand that they might be able to apply for and receive other benefits from other federal programs. Because of that, it is important to understand all options available to an applicant in case SSI is not enough to meet his or her needs.
